I often like to think about new ideas that might help me in business. I’m sure most of you do the same thing. It’s good to try something new. There is a good friend of mine who wrote the contrarian effect. She said that most of what we believe is the right thing to do in business sometimes is not the best thing for us. I tend to agree.
For instance, we are told that cold calling is what you should do when you are in sales. Now, I have had some success with cold calling but its a huge waste of time. I know some of the old school salesmen are going to beat me up here but I’m gonna say this anyway. The cold calling technique is pretty intrusive. (especially door to door sales but we can talk about that some other time.) Most technology sits in the way of an effective cold calling process. People have closed their minds to the droning sound of a cold caller going thru a flow chart on the other end of the line. Why bother with that when their minds would accept your message somewhere else.
This post today was not about selling and its not about what you choose to get to your prospects. My point today is to simply try something different. Too many people are hurting today because they have become so trained in what they do, they fear of trying something new. How can your business survive tough times? How can you PROVE to a consumer that you really have the better product? (I don’t mean just saying it or just believing it… I mean real PROOF.)
The things that may have worked 8 months ago might not be working for you now. How long will you wait to try something new? I’ll tell you that its a humbling experience to speak with another human being as a coach or a mentor. I have several and the only reason why I started down that path was because I felt that I really was not optimal. For those who worked with me they can probably vouch for this. Either way, its in the past. Over the course of 4 years or so I had some really remarkable people help me accomplish things that sounded like far fetched dreams at the time. Who do you know that can be of some support to you?
Pick your team of people that you can trust. Hire someone if you have to. It makes a difference to try something new, I don’t care what it is. It adds to your experience. You just might find something that really helps your business look even more unique than it already is. If you decide to try something new, let me know what it is. I’m curious. If you don’t have a buisness, try something new at the job. Find new ways to re-invent your position so the company sees an ROI in the expense of your salary. Even if they don’t fully appreciate it, you have perfected your skill-sets. That is always a good thing!
